Venous Testing Austin
Chronic Venous Disease:
Chronic Venous Disease (CVD) covers the whole range of venous disorders including cosmetic (unsightly) veins, some of which bulge, as well as deeper problems. Venous diseases can be diagnosed through
venous testing administered at the
Austin, Texas clinic of Dr. John Hovorka, All In Veins. Vein disorders CAN develop into a deeper problem than what can be seen on the surface and is associated with pain as well as swelling. We call vein disease Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) when you begin to have swelling or skin changes. With venous insufficiency, the valves in the veins have become damaged. These valves normally keep blood flowing toward the heart, but damaged valves allow some blood to flow backward, causing the veins to become overfilled. Fluid seeps out of the engorged veins into the surrounding tissues, resulting in tissue breakdown and venous skin ulcers.

CVI is responsible for more than 6 million hospital admissions in the United States alone and Varicose veins are estimated to afflict greater than 24 million Americans. Often times individuals are not aware they have venous disease and find out after their symptoms worsen. The potential severity of these diseases is significant. It can lead to hospitalization, severe disability and can even be fatal. With early detection, venous disease can be treated effectively with minimally invasive techniques. As with any disease, Venous disease is easier to treat in the beginning stages, but can be detected and treated at any stage.
Diagnosis of Chronic Venous Disease:
At All in Veins, Dr. Hovorka tests for Chronic Venous Disease by conducting a duplex ultrasound to provide the information needed to recommend treatment. There are several other simple screening tests that detect vein problems, all of which are non-invasive and painless. Additional routine examinations include digital photo plethysmography and sometimes air phlethysmography. For patients that also have CVI, sometimes Venous pressure measurements are recommended. In severe chronic venous insufficiency patients arm/foot pressure differential and Ambulatory Venous Pressure measurements may also be needed.

Other commonly performed tests include Venography and Intra Vascular Ultrasound (IVUS). The ready availability of IVUS has decreased the amount of dye necessary for most venograms, making the examination safer and allows us to truly address a broad spectrum of venous disease.

Cosmetic Veins:
If after testing, the patient is shown to have cosmetic veins, Dr. Hovorka will classify the patient on a 9 to 1 scale. This scale was developed by Clinica Miyake to classify patients that have aesthetic and/or cosmetic complaints. Once the type of veins you have is identified on the scale, Dr. Hovorka will assign appropriate measures for treatment. One such method is a combination of Laser and Sclerotherapy called the
ClaCs .
Medically Necessary Patients:
For patients who are deemed medically necessary after testing, duplex ultrasound of the inferior vena cava and iliac veins may be warranted. If there is clinical suspicion by history of symptoms or certain signs are present, then Intra Vascular Ultrasound (IVUS) may be recommended.
Candidates for Venous Testing:
Venous screening should be performed on individuals who have aching leg pain, fatigue or heaviness of the legs, swelling, itchy legs, restless legs, night cramps, skin color changes and bleeding skin ulcers. Dr. Hovorka along with the first National Screening Program for Venous Disease created by the
American Venous Forum in concert with the American Vascular Association, believes venous disease must become a national health care priority and is committed to improving public awareness and understanding of venous disease. Currently, Dr. Hovorka offers comprehensive screening programs for the Austin and McAllen and their surrounding areas for anyone who believes they may be suffering from venous disease.
