Pin Stripping Austin

Pin stripping or venous stripping with a "Pin" stripper is a minimally invasive technique used to remove superficial veins. In cases where patients have longer veins, "Pin stripping" may be an option. The advantages to Pin stripping include the avoidance of the additional cost of the laser and radiofrequency, and can be performed in Austin, Texas on most patients that are not obese with incisions that are so small that they are cosmetically pleasing and in time fade and are not even seen.

How is Pin Stripping Performed?

Pin stripping is generally performed with tumescent anesthesia (a dilute local anesthetic) which assists in giving anesthetic as well as loosening up the vein for removal. For larger veins, (like the great saphenous vein) a small incision is made near the knee and the vein is identified with ultrasound outside of the body (commonly called intraoperative ultrasound) and brought out so a small wire or "pin stripper" can be advanced to where the vein enters into the muscle.veinstrip3.jpg In this area and again with ultrasound assistance and the wire in place the vein is able to be brought out through the skin through a very small incision (usually 2 millimeters). The part of the vein near where it enters to the muscle is tied, and the remaining part is then cut and tied to the stripper and pulled out through the bottom of the incision.

Recovery:

After the procedure, bandages are applied and a special technique to apply more pressure to the area where the vein was in place called the "crossed tape" technique. crossed_tape.jpgBandages do have to start at the foot and go continuously all the way up the leg. Pin stripping is also effective in veins that are below the knee and are fairly long and straight and is commonly used with microphlebectomy. Limitations of Pin Stripping include severe swelling and obesity.
