Physiological Venous Terms
Venous Vascular Incompetence
Venous valve dysfunction resulting in retrograde venous flow of abnormal duration.
Venous Reflux
Retrograde venous flow of abnormal duration in any venous any segment
Primary
Caused by idiopathic venous dysfunctionPost-Thrombotic
Caused by previous thrombosisCongenital
Caused by the absence or abnormal development or lack of regression of veins or valvesSecondary
Caused by Thrombosis, trauma, or mechanical, thermal or chemical etiologiesCongenital
Caused by the absence or abnormal development of venous veins and/or valvesSuperficial
Confined to the superficial venous systemDeep
Confined to the deep venous systemCombined
Involving any combination of the three venous systems ( superficial, deep perforating)Segmental Reflux
Localized retrograde flow in venous segments of any of the three venous systems (superficial, deep, perforating) in any combination in the thigh and/or calf but not in continuity from the groin to calfPerforator Incompetence:
Perforating veins outward flow of abnormal durationNeovascularization
Presence of multiple new, small tortuous veins in anatomic proximity to a previous venous interventionVenous Occlusion
Total obliteration of venous lumenVenous Occlusion Plethysmography
VOP a functional test that involves a cuff to be inflated proximal to the area of interest above the level of the venous system ( typically 70 mmHg )
Reactive Hyperemic Occlusion
Plethysmography RHOP cuff proximal to area of interest inflated to greater than arterial pressure (classically 300mmhg for 3 minutes sometimes modified to 30mmhg greater than the systolic pressure)
Venous Obstruction
Partial or total blockage to venous flow in a venous segmentVenous Compression
Narrowing or occlusion of the venous lumen as a result of extra-luminal pressureRecanalization
Development of a new lumen in a previously obstructed veinIlaic Vein Obstruction Syndrome
Venous symptoms and signs caused by narrowing or occlusion of the common or external iliac veinNIVL
Non-thrombotic Iliac Vein Lesion--an anatomic/morphologic finding in a patient with no objective evidence of venous thrombosis
