Lymphedema Austin

Definition of Lymphedema:

lymphedema-1.jpgThere are multiple definitions of lymphedema, the strictest from Foldi's textbook is a protein rich edema that is caused by a mechanical obstruction of the lymphatic system. Lymph collected from tissues throughout the body drains into lymphatic channels which drain into the large veins near the heart. Too much lymph fluid will cause leg swelling, and this swelling is often due to venous disease.  Nearly one million Americans are affected by lymphedema, which can be treated at the Austin, Texas practice of Dr. John Hovorka, All In Veins. Symptoms generally include excessive swelling, ulceration of the leg, and infection. There are multiple other types of edemas such as Lipoedema, phlebolymphostatic edema and lipophlebolymphedema.

Dr. Hovorka:

Lymphedema-leg.jpgDr. Hovorka is a member of the National Lymphedema Network (NLN) and has been to a course that meets the standards set forth by the National Lymphedema Network for the treatment of Lymphedema Therapists which is consistent with the Lymphology Association of North America (LANA) standards. In 2010, Dr. Hovorka received additional training to become a Certified Lymphedema Therapist.  As one of only a handful of Surgeons to have this training, Dr. Hovorka is certified to not only diagnose, but also to treat Venous Lymphedema.

Treatment:

The most common and effective treatments for lymphedema are a combination of the use of manual lymphatic massage and compression bandaging.  Also, Dr. Hovorka treats lymphedema with sequential gradient pumps.  The complete therapy is called Complete Decongestive Therapy.  Some insurers have been specific to only cover treatment done by therapists when there are significant symptoms and so like in many areas of medicine you may be a candidate for treatment of lymphedema, but it might not be covered by insurance. This is particularly true in cases of lower extremity lymphedema that is stage 0,1, and sometimes stage 2.
